How do I fix issues with my dependent information?

Explains how to fix common dependent issues in april, including removing a dependent, correcting dependent information, resolving Social Security number errors, and what to do if your return is rejected.

Why am I being asked about a dependent if I don't have one?

If you're certain you don't have any dependents and No is selected in About you, follow these steps:

  1. Go to About you and confirm No is selected for Do you have any dependents?

  2. If you're still prompted for a dependent, go back and select Yes, then select Continue

  3. On the next screen, find the dependent and select the three dots (...)

  4. Select Delete

  5. Return to About you

  6. Select No for Do you have any dependents?, then select Continue

This should remove the dependent information and allow you to continue filing.

What if a dependent's Social Security number is already in use?

Double-check the Social Security numbers for all dependents you've added. Make sure each dependent has the correct number and that the same number wasn't accidentally entered for more than one dependent.

If all Social Security numbers are correct and you still see the message, type "Talk to a person" in the chat to contact our support team.

I fixed my dependent information, but I’m still getting a rejection. What should I do?

Review your dependent's information, including their:

  • Name

  • Date of birth

  • Social Security number

  • Relationship to you

Correct any errors, then resubmit your return.

If you've confirmed the information is correct and your return is still rejected, type "Talk to a person" in the chat to contact our support team.

Key takeaway

If you're seeing unexpected dependent prompts, go to About you and confirm your answer is set to No -- or delete the dependent and reset that answer. For Social Security number errors or a rejected return, review each dependent's information carefully and resubmit. If issues persist, contact our support team through the chat.
