How do I add or remove education expenses and Form 1098-T information?

Explains how to add or remove education expenses and Form 1098-T information in april, including what to do if you uploaded a form instead of entering it manually.

What you see in the education section depends on what you select in Credits and deductions. If you have a school tax form (Form 1098-T), enter the information manually instead of uploading the form.

Follow the steps below based on your situation:

If you paid education expenses

  1. Go to Credits and deductions

  2. On Boost your refund with these credits, select Paid educational costs for yourself or for a dependent, then select Continue

  3. On Tell us about students, select Add student info

  4. Answer the questions about the student, then select Continue

  5. On Enter the following information for the educational institution the student attends in 2025, select Add institution

  6. Enter the information exactly as it appears on Form 1098-T, then select Continue

You can add one Form 1098-T per student. To add another student, select Add student info and repeat these steps.

If you didn’t pay education expenses

  1. Go to Credits and deductions

  2. On Boost your refund with these credits, unselect Paid educational costs for yourself or for a dependent

  3. Select Continue

This removes the education and Form 1098-T questions from your return.

If you uploaded a Form 1098-T

Form 1098-T information must be entered manually. If you uploaded the form:

  1. Select the folder icon to open Document Manager

  2. Delete the uploaded Form 1098-T

  3. Return to Credits and deductions and enter the information manually

If you uploaded more than one Form 1098-T for the same student, delete the extra copies.

Important:

  • Form 1098-T information must be entered manually

  • Each student can have one 1098-T

  • Uploaded copies should be removed from the Document Manager

  • Information must match the form exactly
