Why did I get this rejection?
The IRS allows you to sign and e-file your return using a prior-year Self-Select PIN, which is a five-digit number you chose last year.
This rejection means the PIN entered doesn’t match what the IRS has on file.
How to fix a rejection in april
If your return was rejected, you can make changes and resubmit it directly in april, the tax filing app you’re using.
Go to your april account
On the Tax home screen, select Make updates
Review the message(s) explaining why your return was rejected
Select Update my info to fix each issue listed
Check the info carefully to prevent any other rejections
Continue making any other needed changes, then resubmit your return when you’re done
You can make updates as long as your return is rejected. Once it’s accepted, it becomes read-only.
Confirm your prior-year PIN
Enter the exact five-digit Self-Select PIN you used on last year’s return
Double-check for typos or missing digits
If you don’t remember your PIN
This is common—and easy to fix.
Switch from using a prior-year PIN to using your prior-year AGI instead
Enter your AGI exactly as its hown on Line 11 of your 2024 Form 1040
Learn how to find your prior-year AGI here.
If you’re still getting rejected
If neither the PIN nor AGI works:
Request an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) from the IRS
Enter your IP PIN in april and resubmit your return
If e-file still isn’t accepted, print and mail your return to the IRS
