What do the different filing statuses mean?

Explains what each filing status means, including Pending, Submitted, Accepted, and Rejected, where to see your status, and what to do next if your return needs attention.

Updated yesterday

You can see your filing status on your Tax home screen. Your status shows where your return is in the filing process and whether you need to take any next steps.

Here’s what each status means:

Pending

Pending means your return hasn’t been submitted to the IRS or your state yet.

This can happen if:

  • Filing isn’t open yet

  • Your return is ready but waiting to be sent

While your return is pending, you can keep reviewing or updating your information in april.

Submitted

Submitted means your return was sent to the IRS and your state (if applicable).

At this stage:

  • The tax agencies are reviewing your return

  • You don’t need to do anything right now

Your status will change to Accepted or Rejected after the IRS finishes reviewing it.

Accepted

Accepted means your federal and/or state return was accepted by the tax agencies.

What happens next depends on your situation:

  • If you’re getting a refund, the IRS will process it and send your payment once they’re done reviewing your return

  • If you owe taxes, you’ll need to pay by the due date to avoid penalties or interest

Once your return is accepted, it can’t be edited. If you need to make a change, you’ll file an amended return.

Rejected

Rejected means there’s an issue with your return that needs to be fixed before it can be accepted. Rejected returns are common and usually easy to fix.

If your return is rejected:

  • Log in to april and go to your Tax home screen

  • You’ll see a message prompting you to Make updates

  • We’ll explain why your return was rejected and how to fix the issue

  • After you make corrections, you can review it and resubmit

Why statuses may look different in different places

You might sometimes see different wording across screens—for example, “in progress” on the home screen and “submitted” in the filing section. This usually means your return has already been sent. Your Tax home screen will update as the IRS processes it.

Your Tax home screen is the best place to check your most up-to-date status.
