How do I add, remove, or correct dependent information on my tax return?

Explains how to add, remove, or correct a dependent on your tax return, including what you can do before submitting, what happens if the IRS rejects your return, and when you’ll need to file an amended return after acceptance.

If you need to add, remove, or correct a dependent on your tax return, what you do next depends on whether you’ve already submitted your return and how the IRS responds.

If you haven’t submitted your return yet

If you haven’t submitted your return, you can still add, remove, or update dependent information.

Go back to the About your household section. Once you've entered a dependent's information, you'll see the Here's who you're claiming as your dependents screen.

From here, you can:

  • Select Add another dependent to add someone else

  • Select the three dots (...) next to a dependent's name to edit their information or remove them

When you're finished, select Continue and review your return before submitting.

Why am I being asked about a dependent if I don't have one?

If you don't have any dependents but april is still asking you to enter dependent information, follow these steps:

  1. Go back to About you

  2. Confirm that No is selected for Do you have any dependents?

  3. Select Continue

If you're still being asked for dependent information, type "Talk to a person" in the chat to contact our support team.

What’s a dependent?

A dependent is a person you claim on your tax return for certain tax benefits, like a child, parent, or other qualifying person.

For eligibility details, see Who can I claim as a dependent?

If you submitted your return and the IRS rejected it

If the IRS rejects your return, we'll let you know what needs to be fixed. When you log back in, you'll see the reason your return was rejected.

Select Make updates to correct any dependent information the IRS flagged.

Once you’ve made the update, review your return and resubmit it.

I fixed my dependent information, but I’m still getting a rejection. What should I do?

Review your dependent's information, including their:

  • Name

  • Date of birth

  • Social Security number

  • Relationship to you

Correct any errors, then resubmit your return.

If you've confirmed the information is correct and your return is still rejected, type

"Talk to a person" in the chat to contact our support team.

What if a dependent's Social Security number is already in use?

Double-check the Social Security numbers for all dependents you've added. Make sure each dependent has the correct number and that the same number wasn't accidentally entered for more than one dependent.

If all Social Security numbers are correct and you still see the message, type "Talk to a person" in the chat to contact our support team.

If you submitted your return and the IRS accepted it

Once the IRS accepts your return, you can't make changes to the original return. However, you can file an amended return in the app to add, remove, or correct dependent information.
