If the IRS issued you an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN), there are a few ways to find it:
Check your IRS notice CP01A
If you’re a confirmed victim of tax-related identity theft, the IRS mails you a CP01A notice each year.
Look for the line that starts with “Your assigned IP PIN is…”
The notice includes your current-year IP PIN
If you have the notice, this is the fastest way to find it.
Log in to your IRS online account
You can view your IP PIN anytime through your IRS online account.
Sign in to your account on the IRS website
Your current IP PIN will be listed in your account details
Don’t have an account yet? You’ll need to create one and verify your identity to access your IP PIN.
Call the IRS for help
If you can’t find your IP PIN online or in your notices, you can call the IRS at 800-908-4490.
Be ready to verify your identity
An IRS representative can help reissue your IP PIN if needed
This option works best if you can’t access your online account.
Important reminders
Your IP PIN is six digits
It changes every year
You must use the current-year IP PIN to e-file
