A guide on how to find last year's tax return and your AGI

Using your AGI from last year’s tax return (IRS Form 1040) is one way you can verify your identity when you file this year’s taxes. Your AGI is found on Line 11 of last year’s tax return (your 2022 IRS Form 1040.)

If you did not file taxes last year, enter $0 for your AGI.

Here’s how to find your prior year return and your AGI in several popular tax software products:

TurboTax

  1. Go to https://myturbotax.intuit.com/ and select “Sign in.”

  2. Select “Your tax returns & documents.”

  3. Select the year 2022, then select “Download/print return (PDF).”

  4. Find Line 11 on the first page of the 1040.

  5. Enter the number from Line 11 in the “Adjusted Gross Income” box when filing this year’s taxes with april.

TaxAct

  1. Go to https://www.taxact.com/auth/ and select “Sign in.”

  2. Find the section labeled “2022 Taxes” and select the dropdown.

  3. Select the “Actions” dropdown and then “Download Return.”

  4. Find Line 11 on the first page of the 1040.

  5. Enter the number from Line 11 in the “Adjusted Gross Income” box when filing this year’s taxes with april.

    Note: If you don't see the “2022 Taxes” section, check for “My Tax Returns” in the top menu.

H&R Block

  1. Go to https://account.hrblock.com/ or the MyBlock app and select “Sign in.”

  2. Select “Taxes” in the menu.

  3. Select the “Prior Years” tab.

  4. Select “View My Tax Return” for 2022.

  5. Open the document and find Line 11 on the first page of the 1040.

  6. Enter the number from Line 11 in the “Adjusted Gross Income” box when filing this year’s taxes with april.

Other tax softwares

With any other tax software, log in to your account and view or download last year’s tax return (your 2022 IRS Form 1040). Find your AGI on Line 11 of the first page.

Getting your tax return from the IRS

  1. Log in or create an account with the IRS at https://sa.www4.irs.gov/ola/.

  2. Select “View Tax Records” under the “Records” section.

  3. Select “Get Transcript” under the “Get Transcripts Online” section.

  4. Choose “Federal Tax” in the “Reason” box, leave the “Customer File Number” box blank, and select “Go.”

  5. Select the year 2022 in the “Return Transcript” section to view your tax return information from last year.

  6. Find "ADJUSTED GROSS INCOME" under the “ADJUSTMENTS TO INCOME” section. That number is your AGI — enter it in the “Adjusted Gross Income” box when filing your taxes this year with april.
