Can I enter an ITIN instead of an SSN?

Explains that april doesn’t support ITINs for DIY tax filing, why an “Invalid SSN” error appears, and when an SSN is required for filers, spouses, and dependents.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

No. april doesn’t support filing with Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs) at this time. To e-file with april, everyone on the return needs a valid Social Security number (SSN).

What’s required to file with april

To complete a DIY return in april, you’ll need an SSN for:

  • You, as the primary filer

  • Your spouse, if filing jointly or separately

  • Any dependents you’re claiming

If anyone on the return only has an ITIN, you won’t be able to continue filing in april this year.

Why you may see an error

If you enter an ITIN instead of a Social Security number, you’ll see an error message when you try to continue.

  • Invalid SSN provided

This usually means the number was entered correctly, but ITINs aren’t supported.

Does filing status change this?

No. SSNs are required even if you:

  • File Married Filing Separately

  • Have a spouse with an ITIN

  • Claim a dependent with an ITIN

What to do next

If you, your spouse, or a dependent only has an ITIN, you’ll need to use a filing option that supports ITINs this year.
